News From Mr Gallagher’s 3rd Class

Our Clay Monasteries

Long, long ago Ireland was known as the Land of Saints and Scholars. There were many, many monasteries.

A while ago my class began to learn about monks and their monasteries.

Then, Mr. Gallagher told us we were going to be making our own monasteries. He gave us a few minutes to guess how.

Mr. Gallagher then told us we would be using……….CLAY!

After all the cheering died down we got into groups and Mr. Gallagher chose a leader for each group.

The four leaders were Ruairí Lehane, Amy Hart Murray, Kacey McGrane and me.

The leader got to choose who made what.

On the first day my group had made three sheep, two cows, half of the wall, the round tower, the monks’ huts, the scriptorium, the well and four trees.

Soon though, we ran out of clay. We had to join groups. Ruairí joined my group, Kacey stayed on her own and so did Amy.

By the second day, we also had a refectory, a guest house, another pen of animals, a new well, more monks’ huts, a new scriptorium, lots more trees, a graveyard and a church.

After we had finished, or at least nearly finished, our clay monasteries we got to name them!

There was the Black Bible Monastery,

The Monastery of Saint Patrick

and my monastery, The Monastery of Lord Jesus Christ.

We had GREAT fun making them!

THANK YOU MR. GALLAGHER!!!
