Footballers!

Last Saturday, Michael, Daniel and Eoin (above), represented Meath Cumann Na mBunscoil in a football blitz in Louth. Each team played four matches against the other county. All went well as all the Meath teams won all their matches. We had a very enjoyable day.

(Report by Eoin)

Well done boys! (Ed)

Many congratulations to the boys and girls of Second Class who made their First Holy Communion on Saturday at 10.00 am in our Parish Church.

The pupils and their teachers, Ms Dowling and Ms McGuone had been preparing for many weeks for this big occasion in the lives of our young people.

We are glad that everyone involved had a great day.

A special word of thanks to School Chaplain and Parish Priest, Father Derek Darby for his support and kindness to the pupils in Second Class and to all in Saint Mary’s!

Another word of thanks to everyone who helped us make it to this wonderful day, especially our Special Needs Assistants, Fran, Annette, Hilde, Aisling and Dairína for their help in preparing the artwork and decorating the Hall so beautifully.

Sincere thanks also, to Sandra, Maurice and Joe for preparing the school, both inside and out and having everywhere looking so well.

Go Team Saint Mary’s!

It’s that time of year again!

Testing is being carried out at present, so we ask that you try and ensure your children are at school for these important days.

Congratulations to the Girls’ Soccer Team who played recently in the FINALS of the Meath Soccer league, in Navan!

On the 11th of April, the Junior Girls’ Soccer team made it to the Meath Finals after qualifying before Easter. Sadly, we came to the end by losing three matches and drawing one. We would all like to say a big thank-you to Ms Moroney and Ms Daly for helping us with the soccer. We would also like to say thank-you to the Senior girls’ Soccer team and all the teachers for supporting us the whole way through. Report by Aoife C.

Well done girls!

Girls’ Football Report

On the 27th of February 2018 the St. Mary’s Senior Girls team, pictured above, had their first match of the season.  This year our team is in the premier division after winning the final in Parnell Park last year.  We played Skerries, last years winners at home.  There was an extremely close first half played.  With both teams having scored there was close to nothing in it, but as the whistle blew unfortunately Skerries were in the lead. With some encouragement from our coaches we held our heads high.  Proud to be wearing our new girls  St. Mary’s jerseys sponsored by the Ashbourne Credit Union,  we put up another great fight.  As the match continued some snow started to fall which led to tougher conditions.  As St. Marys scored unfortunately so did Skerries.  So when the whistle blew for the last time that day sadly Skerries had just about won.  With our coaches proud of us we tried to look at the glass half full.  We were new to this division and we had such a close match against last years winners.  So overall a good start to the season.  The Skerries coach came over and praised us for our fight saying they were a tough team to beat.  With that he wished us good luck and that was that!

Chess Winners Announced!

Pictured are the winners of Mr Ó Brádaigh’s Chess Club Competition, held recently. The standard of play was phenomenal and we applaud all the winners and runners-up. We’d also like to thank Mr Ó Brádaigh for all his mentoring of the children involved. Bravo!

Music Workshops

Second Class participated in Córfhéile na Scoileanna 2018 recently held in the National Basketball Arena, Tallaght. They played their recorders beautifully and really entertained the audience of parents, teachers and other schools.

The amount of hard work that it took to get to such a high musical standard was evident on the day.

Congratulations boys and girls!

A special word of thanks to Ms Dowling, who conducted on the day and trained the two classes. Thanks too, to Ms McGuone for her help and support.

There was even more scooting in Junior Infants this week…

The pupils of Junior and Senior Infants are experiencing the thrill of speed as they are attending scooting lessons given by Caroline!

It’s not a random exercise however as the children are being educated in the safe ways of scooting, enabling them to scoot wherever they like in safety.

We are delighted at the progress made by all the children taking part.

Well done children and a special word of thanks to Caroline for all her hard work in guiding the children through the course.

Now! Scoot off with you, boys and girls!!!

Congratulations to Ms Moroney’s and Mr Cawley’s classes who made their Confirmation  on Saturday, February 24th in our Parish Church.

The lovely ceremony, Celebrated by Bishop Smith was very uplifting.

We are very proud of you all, 6th Class and we wish you well for the future!

Congratulations to everyone concerned.

Ms Biggs’ 4th Class will be appearing at the 2018 Córfhéile in March and they are already rehearsing like professionals!

Conducted by Ms Biggs, they gave us a magnificent performance of their three pieces at Assembly on February 23rd. The standard of singing was fantastic, with beautiful clear notes and wonderful dynamics. We wish them well at Corfhéile and we thank them all for their hard work and dedication to their task!

Mol an Óige!

(Córfhéile is a non-competitive school choir festival held every year in Dublin, but even though it is non-competitive, the standard of singing is super-high!)

Scooting Workshops

Headgear at the ready!

Many classes in the school took part in scooting workshops with Caroline.

Scooter Parking FULL!

The children really enjoyed the day and are now trained to scoot safely whenever they are out and about and on their way to school.

Loving it!

Thanks Caroline and also, a word of thanks to the Green Team and their teacher leaders for organizing such a fun event!

Speed 3…

Now, scoot off with you…!

Saint Mary’s was proud to take part in the Dublin Peace Proms Concert in the RDS on Sunday afternoon, February 4th last.

Along with 2,500 other children from schools across the region, we sang and danced for two hours. It was an action-packed day.

We left Ashbourne at 10:45 a.m. and were back at 5:30 p.m., tired but happy. Many thanks to the children for their enthusiasm and their hard work over the many weeks of lunchtime rehearsals!

Lunchtimes just won’t be the same…

A  special word of thanks to Ms Wylde for organizing everything so well.

Well done everyone and thank you!!!

In honour of Saint Brigid, the boys and girls in Mr Giblin’s, Third Class made St Brigid’s crosses from reeds and rushes in the traditional way.

Assisted by Mr ÓBrádaigh, the pupils took well to their task and completed some really excellent examples of the cross, which St Brigid took with her on her work to convert the Irish to Christianity.

Great idea!

Well done everyone!

This year’s theme is:   #UP2US

The internet and social media are wonderful tools which can really enhance the lives we lead. We ALL need to stick together and protect ourselves from the less welcome side to living in cyber space.

So…let’s take up the challenge to make the internet safe for everyone! See below…

In our school we take cyber security and cyber-bullying seriously!

CyberSafeIreland is a not-for-profit organisation that works to empower children, parents and teachers to navigate the online world in a safe and responsible manner.

***************

As well as organising talks and tutorials, we are here all year-round to help parents and students stay safe online.

See how, below…

(They’re up a bit, on the right of this page.)

2.Check out the video below. Made in Cork, it contains hints on how to deal with cyber-bullying.

It’s a great message for our children.

A powerful way to tackle cyber-bullying!

Keep talking about how to stay safe online and how to cope with online/mobile bullying.

Senior Girls Football

The Senior Girls Footballers had their first training session of 2018 last week. There were 39 players, from 3rd class to 6th class on the field on the day!! That’s very impressive. Ms Kavanagh and Ms Flaherty were equally impressed with the turnout and the high level of skill demonstrated by the  girls.

Pictured are some of the squad on the day.

Well done everyone on a great start to the new year!

FAI Football Coaching Sessions

During the week, Johnny Brokins from the FAI and 6 pupils from Ashbourne Community School came to the school and did football drills with us.

We started off with a warm-up by running around the yard and running into groups. Two ACS coaches gave us footballs. While we were dribbling, the coaches called out numbers and also colours. Green meant go, red meant stop and orange meant run on the spot.

After that we did two versus two matches. It was great fun. Thanks to Johnny and the ACS pupils for coming!

A look back…

The Saint Mary’s Carol Service and Nativity Play took place on Tuesday, December 19th at 7:30pm in the Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, Ashbourne. It was a great night. Thanks to everyone who helped.

We are a SINGING School!

We were delighted to see you all at this wonderful celebration of the real meaning of Christmas.

As usual, the Church was PACKED on the night and we had a wonderful time re-living the events surrounding the first Christmas.

To the actors, the soloists and the children in the congregation we say a huge CONGRATULATIONS!

A huge thank you to everyone who helped in any way.
